Google Business Profile – why it matters more than you think

Why Your Google Business Profile Is One of the Most Important (and Overlooked) Marketing Tools

If you are a small business owner, your Google Business Profile might be the most powerful free tool you have, and many businesses either forget about it or set it up once and never touch it again.

When someone hears about your business, the very first thing they do is Google you.

They don’t check Instagram or dig through Facebook (thought they’ll hopefully make it there and become a fan and follower). They aren’t sifting through your website…yet. They ‘Google’ your name. (Google is a noun, but how many of us use it as a verb. Guilty? We sure are.)

What shows up in the moment after this quick search determines whether they visit you… or move on.

We like to equate a business’s digital presence to a sign outside a brick and mortar store that needs painting or repairing. It’s a first impression in the same way. If a customer doesn’t see a sign in the first place, they are likely to keep driving on by.

If Customers Cannot Find You, They Cannot Choose You

Imagine this: Someone recommends your shop to a friend and that friend pulls out their phone and searches for you. If your Google listing is missing, incomplete, or outdated, a few things happen:
  • They are not sure if you are still open.
  • They cannot quickly find your hours.
  • They do not know your exact location.
  • They see no photos to confirm they are in the right place.
  • They question your legitimacy.

When people feel uncertain, they default to convenience. They click on the next business that looks active and clear. It is rarely personal, but simply about ease.

Incorrect Hours Create Instant Frustration

Let’s talk about one of the biggest issues we see: inaccurate hours.

Few things frustrate customers more than driving across town only to find locked doors when Google said you were open. Especially in small towns, word travels fast. And unfortunately, frustration travels faster than praise.

Holiday hours are a huge factor here. Customers genuinely do not know what to expect around:

  • Christmas
  • New Year’s
  • Fourth of July
  • Local festivals or community events

If your profile does not clearly show special holiday hours, customers are left guessing. Some will call or check social media, but unfortunately, many will not. They will simply assume you are closed, or worse, unreliable.

Updating your holiday hours takes minutes while rebuilding trust takes much longer.

Reviews Matter More Than You Think

Your Google reviews are often the deciding factor for new customers. People want reassurance and proof that others have had a good experience.
A steady stream of reviews:
  • Builds credibility
  • Improves your visibility in search results
  • Makes your business feel active and trusted
What’s event more important than receiving reviews? Responding to them.

When future customers see thoughtful responses (especially to the occasional negative review) it shows professionalism and care. Silence can look like avoidance.

Visibility in Local Search

Google prioritizes complete and active profiles.
When your listing is optimized with:
  • Updated hours
  • Accurate categories
  • Fresh photos
  • Answered reviews
You are more likely to appear when someone searches for services “near me.”

In small communities, being visible at the top of that list can make a noticeable difference in foot traffic and inquiries.

Small Town Businesses Cannot Rely on “Word of Mouth” Alone

Word of mouth is powerful. But today, word of mouth almost always ends with a Google search.

If someone recommends you and your profile does not support that recommendation, you are unintentionally creating friction.

The easier you make it for customers to:

  • Find you
  • Trust you
  • Confirm your hours
  • See what you offer
…the more likely they are to walk through your doors.

A Simple But Powerful Habit

Set a reminder once a month to check your Google Business Profile.

Ask yourself:
  • Are my hours correct?
  • Do I need to adjust for upcoming holidays?
  • Have I added any recent photos?
  • Have I responded to new reviews?
  • Is my contact information accurate?
Five minutes of maintenance can prevent dozens of frustrated customer experiences.

A First Impression.

For many businesses, your Google Business Profile is your first introduction. Long before customers hear your voice, experience your service, or step inside your building, they are forming an impression based on what they find online. It serves as your digital handshake. It’s a quick but powerful snapshot that helps people decide whether they can trust you. In today’s world, showing up clearly and consistently is one of the simplest and most effective ways to build credibility within your community.
If you are unsure whether your Google Business Profile is working for you(or quietly working against you), it may be time to take a closer look. A few small updates can make a significant difference in how customers perceive and choose your business. In small towns especially, visibility is everything, and making it easy for people to find and trust you online can directly impact whether they walk through your doors.
